Wayne Ngan (1937 - 2020)

After immigrating to Canada from China in 1951, Wayne Ngan graduated from the Vancouver School of Art with honours in 1963. At the same time he began to be recognized and honoured for his work, winning the A.W. Tickle Award and first prize at the B.C. Craftsman's Exhibit at U.B.C. He began to show his work nationally and internationally. In 1969 he established his pottery on Hornby Island where he lived and worked until recently. Over the years he has travelled to China to study Sung and Ming pottery, returning to build his own Sung Dynasty wood burning kiln. He has also travelled extensively through Japan and exhibited there. In 1983 Wayne Ngan was awarded the Saidye Bronfman Award, Canada's foremost distinction for excellence in the fine crafts.
